Hey Michael, can you Tell us a little about yourself?
I'm 21 years old. Been living in the San Francisco area since I was 9 months old, but wasn't born here. Moved with the family from Florida back in 1990 before I knew what was going on. I'm not the kind of person who classifies myself in a higher sneakerhead group because of my collection or how many subscribers I have on youtube. I'm just a regular guy like everybody else who collects shoes. It angers me that some people put themselves on a pedestal, when all they need is a good smack across the face. The sneaker community isn't a hierarchy.
What first got you into collecting and how long have you been doing it?
My father had a long career with the Disney Hotels so Disney movies have always been prevalent in my life since I can remember. When I was 6 years old, I saw the Air Jordan Chicago 9 for the first time, 50 feet wide, in the movie theater when I saw Space Jam for the first time. Since that first day, I can honestly say I've seen the movie over 1000 times. I don't know what it was about that shoe, but all I had cared about until that point was the colors of the lights in my heels. It changed my entire perspective and outlook on shoes.
Out of these hundreds of shoes, which one means the most to you (ie: which is your favorite and why)?
To be honest, the shoe that means most to me, is a shoe, I no longer have the original pair of, but I do have a retro in my current size. The Air Jordan Playoff 13 released for the first time in 1997 shortly after the movie Space Jam. With the Chicago 9 still being my favorite shoe at the time I didn't get to excited when she told me we were going to get the new 13s releasing that morning. It wasn't until I had the shoes in my hands and was singing my song to tie my shoes. Remember I was only 7, so I was still mumbling the song as I tied haha, but that was the first sneaker that I had ever copped on the release and truly cared about. I was told that years later, and after that first pair of 13s my mother bought me in 1997, everything has been a blur in terms of shoes. Hundreds of pairs over the years, with hundreds stacking up now all in size 13.
Besides your passion in shoes, what other interests or hobbies do enjoy?
My hobbies aside from shoes are photography, film making, and other forms of art. I've always enjoyed freedom of expression whether it be through graffiti, painting, singing, music, or photography. The fact that you can instill an emotion and a feeling with a single snapshot is what opened my eyes about photography. Since I was young it's been a clean pair of Jordan's on my feet and either a disposable or polaroid camera in my hands.
We know you've been in the sneaker culture for a long time, what keeps you motivated to continue on?
The thing that keeps me going with the sneaker culture is that it's always changing, but changing for the better. We can thank Jordan Brand for some of the most iconic shoes over the past 2 decades including first releases, retro's and even re-retro's. But with all "New" Jordan models being as easy pass for sneakerheads, Nike had to bring out the young guns and the young designs. They brought out their Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant lines which feature the vibrant colors, intense colorways and crazy detailing that the sneaker community used to go bananas for when a new Laser etched shoe would drop from Jordan. We've come to expect the lower quality retro's from Jordan, which is a downside, but we've also come to expect the hot colorways from Lebron, Kobe, more recently KD, and even Foamposite's are stepping up the detail with their "Galaxy" colorway.
Where do you see the sneaker culture in 10 years?
I see the sneaker culture being much bigger in 10 years. Over the past 2 years I've seen a sudden increase in the amount of people making videos online and the amount of people camping out. Camping out for sneakers used to be something that only the diehard diehard sneakerheads did. You've got so many people trying to camp out without success that stores are starting to go to the wristbands, which can sort of help, but not really. But at the same time, most sneakerheads in the community just means a better community. It also means that there's going to be more competition for the shoes, which in my eyes helps the community because it helps filter out the hypebeasts and the people who collect to just resell and make money without having a true passion for shoes. I'd like to see collecting be contained to the people who actually collect but with such a growing craze it's going to be impossible.
Any crazy sneaker stories?
I've got a few, but I'll share one with you guys. It was this past 2011 Holiday. I had a buddy of mine, pick me up a pair of Concords when he went and got his, because on the day of release I was working and wouldn't be able to get a pair. I gave him my money with confidence knowing I'd get my pair. He got the pairs he went in to get, but on the way out to his car from the store, he was jumped by 3 guys that had ultimately been waiting for someone to come walking from the store with more than one pair. If there was only one pair then the 3 guys that jumped him would have to fight over that pair themselves, so they picked my friend who had multiples as their target. Now my friend's not a small guy in any sense but he couldn't hang with 3 dudes jumping him. After the jumping and scraping went down, my buddy was left bleeding with no pairs of Concords but he was left with something more important and more valuable, I know some are going to think I'm going to say his life, but no. One of the guys who jumped him, dropped his wallet. He took it to the police, where they took it from there. All 3 men that were involved in the jumping have been arrested and my friend had his pairs returned to him, including the pair he got for me. Depending on the date this is posted, I may or may not have received them yet.
